Known in Vietnamese as Tết Trung Thu, the Mid-Autumn Festival is traditionally celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, when the moon is believed to be at its fullest and brightest.
For generations, the full moon has carried a beautiful symbolism in Vietnamese culture.
Its round shape represents completeness and reunion. Families gather together, children carry colorful lanterns, adults prepare tea and mooncakes, and communities celebrate beneath the autumn moon.
The festival is particularly magical for children.
Traditional toys, masks, lantern processions and lion dances fill the evening with excitement. A Mid-Autumn tray, or mâm cỗ Trung Thu, is often decorated with mooncakes, pomelos, seasonal fruits and imaginative creations made by hand.
Yet behind all these colors and flavors lies something remarkably simple:people making time to be together.

Imagine spending the Mid-Autumn Festival not beneath the lights of a city, but surrounded by the limestone karsts of Lan Ha Bay.
As evening fell, the landscape slowly disappeared into shades of deep blue. The lights aboard Heritage Cruises Binh Chuan began to glow. Above the bay, the moon became the centerpiece of the night.
On the sundeck, a traditional Mid-Autumn celebration awaited our guests.
“Trăng Rằm Trên Vịnh Di Sản”, meaning Full Moon over the Heritage Bay, was created to introduce international travelers to one of Vietnam’s most cherished cultural celebrations.
Guests were invited to gather beneath the moon, discover a traditional Mid-Autumn feast and experience the customs associated with this special night.
For many international guests, it was their first encounter with Vietnamese Mid-Autumn traditions.
For our Vietnamese team, however, these were familiar memories from childhood.
And somewhere between those two perspectives, something beautiful happened: a tradition was shared.
A Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Feast at Sea
One of the most distinctive elements of the celebration was the mâm cỗ Trung Thu — the traditional Mid-Autumn feast.
This is not simply a table filled with food.
Every detail carries the playful imagination associated with Vietnamese childhood.
Seasonal fruits are carefully arranged. Pomelos can be transformed by hand into charming animals. Mooncakes sit at the heart of the feast. Colors, shapes and ingredients come together to create a table designed not only to be eaten, but also admired.
Behind that seemingly effortless display were hours of preparation by the Heritage Cruises team.
The culinary team prepared the feast, while other members worked together on the setting and cultural details of the evening.
Then came the most important moment: phá cỗ.
Literally associated with “breaking into the feast,” phá cỗ is the moment everyone finally gathers around the Mid-Autumn table and shares what has been prepared.
There was no need for a long explanation.
Once the guests gathered, tasted, asked questions and shared the moment together, Vietnamese culture began speaking for itself.

Location changed everything.
A Mid-Autumn Festival in a hotel ballroom would have been beautiful.
But beneath the open sky of Lan Ha Bay, the celebration took on another dimension.
There were no walls around the gathering. Beyond the sundeck were dark silhouettes of limestone mountains. The water reflected scattered lights from the ship. Above everything was the autumn moon.
